Biography

John Connell is a multi-award winning journalist, international bestselling author, playwright, documentary producer, and motivational speaker.  But John’s greatest challenge was not in the office rather it was one he never saw coming; mastering his mental health. A challenge that would see him change his life in every way and emerge a new resilient person.

Having worked for over a decade in media in Australia he is the recipient of 2 Walkley awards; Australia’s highest journalism award for his work into the Sri Lankan Civil war’s aftermath and health crises in Aboriginal Australian communities.

His human rights documentaries have screened internationally and won over a dozen awards while his writing work led to the publishing of his debut memoir The Cow Book which became an international bestseller, including 37 weeks in the Irish bestseller list.

He writes a weekly column for the Irish Independent and is a regular contributor to BBC Radio 4’s A Point of View as well as RTE Radio 1’s Countrywide. His work has also appeared in The Guardian, The Irish Times and the Wall Street Journal.

John’s work as a public speaker has seen him talk all around the world including Ireland, Australia, the USA, and the UK. His motivational speaking work led to him becoming the Movember ambassador for the year in 2018, and also working with Farm Aid in the USA in 2019/2020.

John speaks and writes on mental health issues after suffering his own mental health crisis in the form of a crippling depression which saw him return to Ireland to rebuild his life. His work on mental health has allowed him to work with people on life’s less travelled roads and his own personal story of saving lives has touched the lives of tens of thousands of readers and listeners around the world. Now John makes each day count for the better and speaks and talks on his new found insights.

John has appeared on The Late Late Show, Ryan Tubrdiy radio show, Claire Byrne show, Ray D’Arcy, Matt Cooper, Pat Kenny, Ireland AM, RTE Morning Ireland, ABC (Australia) Conversations, ABC Late Night Live, ABC Sporty, ABC Breakfast news, Channel 9 news, countless podcasts including Jarlath Regan’s An Irishman abroad. He has appeared on BBC Radio’s On your Farm and Saturday Live, BBC Wales and BBC Scotland and NPR Radio (USA).
