Biography

Richelle Carey is an Emmy Award-winning American journalist, host and presenter specializing in international affairs and global politics. She occasionally anchors Al Jazeera’s hit DC-based show The Stream, which caters to a hybrid social and broadcast media audience. Carey was previously principal presenter at Al Jazeera English in Doha, Qatar where she led the network’s coverage of major world events including;a coup attempt in Turkey, military offensive in Yemen and a global shutdown triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Carey is a thoughtful interviewer who deploys the right balance of authority and compassion with guests. She has the ability to address a diverse range of subjects moving seamlessly between current affairs, politics, sports and entertainment. She has conducted hundreds of agenda setting interviews with thought leaders, icons and influencers. This includes Misty Copeland, the first African American female Principal Dancer with the prestigious American Ballet Theatre, her personal hero Janet Jackson and Fawzia Koofi, Afghanistan’s first female deputy speaker of parliament who spent years fighting for women’s rights before narrowly escaping with her life when the Taliban returned to power in 2021.

Throughout the course of her career as a journalist, Carey has been inspired by examples of phenomenal individuals who have overcome violence and adversity.

This has driven her advocacy work which is centred around women and girls. She previously served as vice president of the board of directors at Men Stopping Violence, an organization focused on ending physical and emotional aggression against women. She is currently the co-chair of the Men Stopping Violence Advisory Council.

As a professional moderator, Carey has presided over world class events including the Doha Forum, a gathering of international leaders brought together to address the most pressing global challenges. Her master of ceremonies expertise spans in-person and virtual events, such as the 2020 United Nations General Assembly Action Zone event in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. Her experience of being an isolated anchor in a studio talking to reporters and guests thousands of kilometers away on a remote has given her plenty of practice for the new normal.

A Texas original, Carey attended Smith College in Massachusetts before moving closer to home at Baylor University. After graduation, she began her career in television journalism as an associate producer for KPRC-TV in her hometown Houston before moving on to anchor morning news shows in St. Louis, Las Vegas, and other cities. News anchor roles include Al Jazeera America in New York City and HLN (formerly CNN’s Headline News) in Atlanta. At HLN she hosted ‘What Matters’, a weekly segment focused on topics important to the African-American community.

Carey has recently returned to Houston where she lives with her son
