Biography

Benigno Simeon Aquino was President of the Philippines from 2010-16.

In 1983 after the assassination of his father, he returned from exile to help lead the way with the EDSA People Power Revolution - the non-violent revolution that toppled a dictatorship and restored Philippine democracy.  Aquino served as Representative of the District of Tarlac from 1998 to 2007.  In 2007, he joined the Philippine Senate, where he worked to bring about legislative initiatives anchored on the protection of human rights and responsible governance.

After the death of Aquino's mother (herself a former President) in 2009, public remembrance of the powerful values she stood for lead to Aquino's decision to run for the Presidency.  The strength of his campaign even lead to other presidential candidates relinquishing their own presidential aspirations to support him.  He was elected in June 2010, stating at his inaugural address: “We are here to serve and not to lord over you.  The mandate given to me was one of change. I accept your marching orders to transform our government from one that is self-serving to one that works for the welfare of the nation.”

Aquino’s leadership was the catalyst for economic growth, improved government services and reforms in the education system. He also campaigned for good governance and justice as evidenced by the prosecution of corrupt government officials.
