Biography

Ard van der Steur was minister for Security and Justice in the Netherlands between 2015 and 2017. He served as the Chairman of the European Justice and Home Affairs council during the Presidency of the Netherlands of the European Union. 

Van der Steur was the spokesperson on security and justice in the Dutch Parliament between 2010 and 2015. Van der Steur left the international law firm NautaDutilh as salaried partner in 2006 and co-founded the successful law-firm Legaltree in the following years. He is a lawyer, politician and entrepreneur.

Van der Steur is known for his entertaining and humorous approach to subjects. He gladly shares his knowledge and experience on a broad array of subjects. He has extensive experience chairing meetings, debates and events, ranging from smaller workshops to very large audiences.

Van der Steur is a specialist on all legal affairs, from rule of law, to police cooperation, anti-terrorism activities and the cooperation within the European Union. Van der Steur has distinctive thoughts and ideas about the risks and possible benefits of Brexit. 

He is fluent in English and Dutch and also speaks German, French and some Italian.
